As you serve him, be glad and worship him. Sing your way into his presence with joy!
Psalm 100:2 (TPT)
One of the amazing things about our church is the number of volunteers that we have. Did you know that we have over 155 volunteers across the whole of the church's activities? That’s more than 60% of our congregation who are involved in serving in one way or another. There are 42 volunteers on just the worship team alone! Of course, what is also amazing is how many people volunteer on more than one team and give so much of their spare time.
Our church may be closed for public worship at the moment, but it certainly does not mean that our volunteers have stopped working!
Each week on Mondays and Thursdays, a rotating team of 30 people (drawn from the 50+ volunteers on our foodbank volunteer register), both from within our congregation and the wider community, open our Foodbank to the public and ensure that food is available to those who need it most. The work is hard and physical, requiring many of them to be out in the rain or the extreme heat, lifting heavy boxes and clearing up more surplus bread than you would have thought possible. Recently, in just one week, they achieved over 200 hours of service!
As well as providing physical food, we have continued to provide spiritual food during lockdown. The innovative St Saviour’s online has now been running for nearly three months. It may surprise you to know that producing an hour long service (including preparing for and recording preaching, worship & leading, producing resources for kids, editing and uploading) can take a combined effort of over 50 volunteer hours each week. Then there are the hours people have spent writing bogs and recording reflections. We have been supported by people from outside our worshiping community, volunteering their time to ensure that we can include communion in our online worship.
Life Groups have been continuing to meet as have our extended staff team and the PCC. The many hours spent on Zoom or WhatsApp are all hours of time, given to God in service to the church. Our pastoral care team have continued to support those in need and the Oasis team have ensured that all those members who are isolating have received phone calls and the opportunity to receive a food parcel.
So, on behalf of Barney and the rest of the PCC, we would like to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who plays a part in church life. Church is not the building; it is the people and we are so blessed to have a church family who are so capable and willing to serve God in these ways. Many of the hours are unseen by others, but they are seen by Him. Please know that we so appreciate all you do.
If you’re not currently involved in serving and would like to get involved then please get in touch with the team by emailing serving@stsaviourssunbury.org.uk.
